Maria McKenna received her Ph.D. from Saint Louis University in educational foundations, after completing her undergraduate and graduate work at Notre Dame and Northwestern University respectively. Her teaching and research focus on the social, cultural, and philosophical contexts of American education. She works to highlight the voices of children and minority groups in her research and has a particular interest in understanding urban, public school environments from those perspectives. At Notre Dame, she serves as director of undergraduate studies for the Department of Africana Studies and senior associate director of the Education, Schooling and Society minor.
